He shot and murdered Peter Nickles, 50, popular proprietor of the Double Nickle Bar, in the early morning of January 17, 2004, and shot a female [known only as his estranged wife] who sustained non-life-threatening wounds. He then drove away from the scene in a vehicle across icy yards and clipped shrubs.
A Tompkins County Sheriff’s deputy saw the automobile driving southwest in the 300-400 block of Elmira Road and attempted to stop Meminger. When he refused to stop, Ithaca authorities’ officers and Tioga County Sheriff’s Deputies joined the pursuit, according to authorities. Meminger’s automobile abandoned the road around two miles into Tioga County on Route 34/96. Officers planned to approach the automobile once it stopped carefully, knowing Meminger was armed. When cops arrived at the scene, he had already been killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
