James Vinson Adams’s ex-wife Linda was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut by chemical-industry executive Raymond Charles Arthur Purl and Marshelline “Marshie” Purl.  Mara is her sister.  Beatrice Saville, the girls’ grandmother, founded the Actors’ Equity Association. Purl went to Japan with her family when she was five years old, where her father worked for Nippon Unicar.

James’s ex-wife grew up there and studied acting at the Toho Geino Academy. Linda appeared in various productions at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre, including Louis in “The King and I”, “Bet in Oliver!”, and Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker”. She was also founded by Toho and starred in numerous films. 

Linda Purl went to Wykeham Rise School in Washington, Connecticut, a private boarding school for girls that specializes in creative and performing arts. She had a role in the soap opera The Secret Storm when she was still in high school. Purl later married British screenwriter and producer Alexander Cary, Master of Falkland, on July 23, 1993, with whom she had a son, Lucius, born February 6, 1995. They eventually divorced.

James Vinson’s ex-wife gave birth to him with her third husband, Alexander Cary, whom she married in 1993 and divorced in 1999. Lucius Carey is now a professional soccer player. He has played for various teams in England, Spain, and Ireland. He also has some acting experience, appearing in a film called The Seer in 2009. She has been in a relationship with Patrick Duffy since 2020.
