Following his son Joe Cole’s death in 1991, he became an activist and started speaking out against violence on television.

Actress Jaclyn Smith, Cole’s second wife, was discovered after he made a cameo appearance on Charlie’s Angels in 1976. They courted for 19 months before getting married. They were wed in 1978 and divorced in 1981. His sole child from his previous marriage to Sally Bergeron, Joe Cole, was shot and killed in 1991 at the age of thirty during an attempted home invasion robbery in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles.
